Prison visitors
Official Prison Visitors in England and Wales are volunteers who are appointed by the Ministry of Justice on the recommendation of the prison governor to visit certain prisoners who have asked for visits to be arranged. Their duty is to befriend those they visit. They have no duties of a specifically religious nature and are sometimes required to avoid religious topics. Friends wishing to offer this service should approach the governor of the prison where they wish to serve. They are supported by a charity known as the National Association of Official Prison Visitors (NAOPV). Some Quakers become prison chaplains after having been a visitor.
